Old Stone Street: Traces of Everyday Life
View photograph ↗
An old street leads the eye through layers of stone, windows and doorways. Its appeal comes from the way separate buildings form a shared space, giving a simple route a distinctive character.
Historic places are not only monuments. Streets can preserve the proportions and textures of everyday life, even as the activities within them change. Looking at them closely draws attention to the smaller settings in which communities take shape.
A photograph cannot tell every story attached to a street. It can, however, preserve a way of looking: attentive to surfaces, curious about what came before and aware that a place continues beyond the edge of the frame.
