A political conversation can become hostile long before anyone discusses a policy. A label is attached, a motive is assumed and the person speaking becomes a symbol of everything the listener dislikes. At that point, disagreement has stopped being an exchange of ideas.

রাজনৈতিক অংশগ্রহণ নিয়ে কথা বলতে গিয়ে অনেক সময় মনে হয়, প্রচারণার মাধ্যমে এর শুরু, ফল ঘোষণায় শেষ। নির্বাচন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। কিন্তু দুই নির্বাচনের মাঝের সাধারণ সময়েও নাগরিক জীবন চলতে থাকে: সেবা চাইতে গিয়ে, স্থানীয় সমস্যা তুলে ধরে কিংবা কোনো সিদ্ধান্তের ব্যাখ্যা জানতে চেয়ে।

Political participation is often discussed as if it begins with a campaign and ends with a result. Elections matter, but citizenship also takes place in the ordinary months between them: when people seek a public service, raise a local concern or ask how a decision was made.
